Halloween, also known as Halloween or All Souls
Night is a celebration of Celtic origin which is celebrated internationally on
the night of October 31 , especially in Anglo-Saxon countries such as Canada,
USA, Ireland or the United Kingdom and, to a lesser extent, in Argentina,
Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru or Latin America overall. Despite being
purely Anglo-Saxon countries, in Australia and New Zealand is not as observed
in other countries.
Its roots are linked to the Celtic celebration of
Samhain and the Christian holiday All Saints' Day, celebrated by Catholics on
November 1st. It is largely a secular celebration, but some believe
it has a religious background. Irish immigrants passed versions of the
tradition to North America during the Great Irish Famine.
The day is often associated with the colors
orange, black and purple and is strongly associated with symbols like the jack-
o' -lantern. Typical activities include the famous Halloween trick or
treating and costume parties, plus bonfires, visiting haunted houses, jokes,
reading scary stories and viewing of horror films
